About a month and a half ago , our very own Mahdox Surf Guru Rommel "Okoy" Rojo quietly made a mark inthe international surfing scene, when he triumphantly battled against other professional surfers around the world in Kuta Bali Indonesia being the only outsider who made it past the trials round and competed in the Oakley O ROKR Pro. Though he did not win, it was a definite success for Filipino surfers as he was the ONLY one who was not from that homebreak and made it past the trial heats and entered the main event, beating Australian ,European, Indonesian surfers whom we all know have been leaders of this sport.

October 24th, Okoy does it again showing his skills, combining new school flashes, speed and determination,He makes it all the way to quarter finals beating several international Professional Surfers in Kuta Bali Indonesia for the 6th Annual International Surfing Competition,sponsored by Honda. These are huge events that involves several veteran opponents and it is not only within asia, but around the world. When asked how he feels about all these achievements, he bashfully remarks, " I am just so happy that Filipinos are finally making it in the international surfing circuit and that even my own best friend luke recently made a mark in international Longboard surfing , I am proud that we are all achieving this together, and am happy we have sponsors like RIPCURL and Aloha that now sends us to these competitions. It was not like this 15 years ago when i first started. "

Oakley O ROKR Pro completes Round 1 Today at Kuta Beach

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 August, 2008 : - - Three trial rounds and Round 1 of the Men’s Division, as well as the majority of the Women’s Division action was completed today in 1-2 foot surf at Halfways Kuta Beach. The rapidly dropping tide together with the small surf and the anticipation of larger surf and better conditions tomorrow were reason enough for Contest Director Tipi Jabrik to call a halt to the action for the day at 1:30 pm.

Three trial rounds started off the morning at just before 8 am to fill the remaining spots in the 64-man lineup. Then the 11 women competitors were called into action and raced through their three heats and semi finals, with Nyoman Satri, Yulie, Yesco and Sena lined up for the Final, which will be held tomorrow.

The Men’s Round 1 Heat 1 competitors paddled out at 10:30 am, and saw Oakley team rider Dewa Made Ardika take the early lead and eventually the win. Coming in second was legend Made Switra, equally at home in large or small surf.

Rommel Ritual Rojo, all the way from the Philippines, was the only out of towner to make it out of the trials and into the main event, but unfortunately couldn’t make it past Ardika and Switra to advance to Round 2.

Local Marlon Gerber, using a purple twin fin, stylishly won Heat 2, choosing the right tool for the job. Tri Wijaya (Tole) was another standout, showing his expertise on the very small waves and coming away with the most points in Heat 4. Other heat winners included Nyoman Maika, Junius Wau, Soma Warsoma, Wayan Winjaya, Komang Winjaya, and in the first heat of Round 2, Tia Nustawan.

Round 2 Heat is set to start off tomorrow morning at 6:30 am, as it will require a full day of competition to complete the contest before the sun sets on Kuta Beach and the bands start playing.

In addition to the surfing competitions, there will also be a BMX Dirt Jump contest with local and national BMX riders, a “panjat pinang” traditional independence day pole climbing competition, and the beach will rock with Bali’s own supergroup Superman is Dead and Jakarta’s St. Loco, testing the limits of the huge 50,000 watt sound system. There will also be the finals of the bikini competition from Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel!

This event is in conjunction with the launch of Oakley’s latest electronic eyewear product, the O ROKR Pro. This event’s main objective is to grow the awareness of surfing itself in Indonesia and to raise the local surfers competitive skills and to bring them to the next level, which is worldwide exposure.

Yuta Morimoto Takes Home Japans First Olympic Longboard Gold Medal at 1st Asian Beach Games in Bali

20 October 2008, Kuta-Bali: Yuta Morimoto from Japan put on an exciting display of Lonboarding expertise at Kuta Beach today, pulling the top combination score of the surfing competition and a 9 point ride, breaking out numerous trips to the nose and back and mixing it up with big turns, floaters, and cutbacks to come back to the beach with Japan's first surfing Olympic gold medal.

Runner up was Luke Landrigan from the Philippines, who surfed excellently all day, even besting Morimoto in a previous heat. Though in the 30-minute mid-afternoon final he couldn't find the answer to Morimoto's strong challenge, he came to the beach proud to have gotten a silver medal for his country.

The two bronze medals were earned by Indonesian surfers Wayan Jodi Windana and Husni Ridwan, who also surfed brilliantly throughout the day and their medal finishes made a great addition to the gold already in hand, thanks to Garut Widiarta's Shortboard win yesterday.

4 butandings have been hanging around the beachbreak area of sabang baler aurora for a couple of days already. they are just so nice and friendly.... Mahdox surf instructors had to chance to meet these friendly creatures using mahdox' supersoft boards.they tried to get a closer look at these marvelous creatures. They are just the cutest!

2007 LANUZA SURFING FESTIVAL

Iniimbitahan ko kayong lahat sa Lanuza Surfing Festival 2007. November 25-27, 2007, Lanuza, Surigao del Sur.

Ako ang gumagawa ng posters at t-shirt design nila mula pa noong 2004. Itong taong ito, inspirasyon ko ang Pilipinas sa design ko. Noong July ko pa ito ginawa para sa maagang promotion ng festival.

Sem-break pa ba sa Pilipinas? Kung wala pa kayong pasok or kung wala naman kayong ginagawa punta kayo dito, malayo nga lang pero try n'yo lang. Sulit ang layo at pagod sa mahabang biyahe. Hindi pa napapasok ng komersyalismo ang lugar, wala ngang landline 'dun, pero malakas naman ang signal ng Smart at Globe. Napaka-simple ng pamumuhay.

Noong 2004 at 2005 nandun ako, grabe nami-miss kong pagkain nila 'dun. Alam n'yo ba yung "puso"? Kanin na isinaing na nakabalot sa dahon ng murang dahon ng n'yog, sarap, hitsura pa lang gaganahan ka na. Tapos napakasarap din ng barbeque nila, napakasimple nang timpla pero ang sarap. At saka inihaw na isda na ibinalot sa dahon ng saging, sarap din. At killer ang lechon 'dun. Killer sa sarap. Ang mga baboy kasi 'dun damo lang ang kinakain, nakatali lang sila sa mga damuhan. Sa pagle-lechon, nilalagyan nila ng tanglad (lemon grass) yung t'yan ng baboy. At hindi uso sa kanila ang Mang Tomas or kahit anong sarsa ng lechon. Ang sawsawan nila ay suka, toyo, calamansi at siling labuyo kaya gaganahan kang talaga. Tapos may "gamus" na gawa sa maliliit na halaan, pipisaan mo ng native lemon at sili. Tapos may nilagang kamote pa na iba-ibang variety, puti, ube at dilaw ang kulay, aaarrgg naglalaway ako. Hindi ako mahilig sa lechon pero kapag nasa Lanuza ako kumakain ako, kasi mula umaga hanggang gabi may handang lechon.

Food trip daw ang ikinuento ko, lol.

Ang nagsimula ng surfing festival sa Lanuza ay ang aking naging kaibigan at mayor ng Lanuza na si Mayor Geri Irrizari, MD at ang kanyang maybahay na si Joy. Sobrang miss ko na ang dalawang ito. Sana ang lahat ng mayor sa Pilipinas ay katulad ni Mayor Geri, hindi nangungurakot, sobrang simple ng buhay, napaka-simpleng tao. Isipin n'yo naman, hindi lang s'ya takbuhan ng mga taga-Lanuza bilang mayor, s'ya pa din ang doktor ng bayan. At ang bayan ng Lanuza ay mahigit limang taon nang nananalo bilang isa sa pinakamalinis at luntiang bayan sa buong Pilipinas, nakakataba talaga ng puso na nakilala ko si Mayor Geri.

Magtanong kayo sa mga surfers sa Pilipinas kung saan sagana sa pagkain sa mga competitions sa Pilipinas. At organized na organized ang buong linggong event nila dahil ang buong komunidad ay kasali bilang mga staff at organizers. Nami-miss ko din yung mga parties sa island, kapag nalasing ka at inabot ka nang high-tide, kinabukasan na ang uwi mo. Pero safe na safe sa Lanuza.

As for the total number of participants in the event including THE TECHNICAL STAFF, SPONSORS, MEDIA AND GUESTS, who have registered, we have reached a total number of 233 participants. Excluding those who have gone to the event and did not register for an ID or a meal stub.....

It definitely was a successful event. I up to now would still get text messages from participants who cant forget how beautiful the event turned out, a thing that's quite uncommon since most of the time we do not actually take time to say a surfing event was so great even days after the event wrapped up. di ba??? we only remember it ending but never actually have the urge to text just to say it was so great...even the grommets became so emotional about the event..... whenever asked on stage to speak, they cant help but cry....!

The BOARDS MADE EVERYONE DROOOOOLLLLL...... quite an amazing site!!!
The winners could hardly carry all the prizes they won from SOUTHPOINT, SECTOR 9 DAKINE, FCS, STICKYBUMPS , accessories and apparel from BILLABONG, TRIBU, BADFISH, SANUK,XGAMEHK, with all the prizes displayed onstage everyone got hypnotized to go to the stage like bees around the jam pot!!!

as for the sector 9 raffle , perfect distribution of luck!!!! Lemon of La union got the first one, then the 2nd one went to the "secret spot" kid who was so happy he thanked THE FILIPINO CHANNEL ( just like how tv contestants would do it on tv) instead of saying thanks to the sponsors,hahha!!! and then the final sector nine, went to ALLEN DE VERA 3rd runner up in the men's open division hailing from Sabang!!! where okoy lives and where most of the surfers reside.... that's why when his name was called out the Sabang boys was ecstatic some even fell off their seats! am not exagerrating...hahha

Seriously Speaking...- a brief history of UNITED PINOY SURFERS

Long before all clubs came in the picture, these three have been around the surfing scene. They have all seen the changing times, the politics, the crowding of the beaches. Luke Landrigan hailed as the complete surfer and most recently the highest ranking Filipino longboarder, Ian Saguan as the first international longboarder of the Philippines, and Okoy Rojo as the most consistent and holding the highest academical accomplishment amongst the seeded surfers, all three have several times shared the limelight as top ranking pinoy surfers.

THE VIEW FROM THE UNITED PINOY SURFERS RETREAT HULAAN NIYO ANONG BUILDING YAN!

Yes ladies and gentlemen, if you think that this site is all my idea.... think again. It came about with the help of these three top surfers. I have long been wanting some change in the surfing scene.A place and a " brotherhood" where locals could be defended, since they only get to speak out only during competitions and after that they once again disappear. I could not take that, and same thing goes to all of three of them. So with the help of Saint Miguel.... we were able to come up with the idea of putting up a group where hopefully someday could be the voice of all locals. Not just from La union or Baler. ALL.

ANOTHER GREAT VIEW FROM UNITED PINOY SURFERS RETREAT DURING CHRISTMAS FROM THE BALCONY. IT EXPLODES RYT IN FRONT OF US!

Locals do not have the time to go online and write things and advertise themselves. I do. And these three carry the right information all the time. no biases, they think about the local surfing scene in general. In one roof all three of the top surfers of the country and one "activist". We were able to come up with the UNITED PINOY SURFERS. This may be a blog for now, but this group has helped so many surfers all over the country, without asking anything in return. from the booking of flights, down to stopovers, or inquiries. We will not stop advertising the local surfers of the philippines. It is a pledge.

The Aurora Surf Riders Association, Inc. is pleased to announce the staging of the 1st Aurora Surfing Challenge on February 9-12, 2007 in Baler, Aurora.

Presented by the Provincial Government of Aurora, the province’s flagship surfing event gathers representatives of major surfing communities across the country. A total cash prize of Php 130,000 is at stake during the 4-day competition.

Lukas once again is champion..... wooohhhoooo,,,,, i tell you.... this heat almost gave me a heart attack.... on is my pinsan-pinsanan luke, the other my anak-anakan tisoy, the next is my protector tangjun, to top it all the other one is my husband okoy! beat that !

Lanuza days!!!

The proof. L-R- Mahdam, Geraldine and Zeny. Mahdam was the first ever beer drinking contest champion women's division in Lanuza. 1st runner up would be Zeny of PSF and third is Geraldine the "banig and Bamboo" board shaper. the year after I wasnt able to compete so Zeny competed as the defending champion. Hahaha.

Lanuza is very dear to me... The first time I went there was

only their 2nd Lanuza surf festival, It was actually that time when they first had Luzon competitors invited. the first ones to have ever been invited to compete and made it there were, Luke Landrigan of La union, Rommel " Okoy" Rojo, Edmund " dyango" Mendoza and Joel " Brother" Faraon of Baler. Mayor Jerry Irizari and his wife Ms. Joy Irizari have become one of our closest friends in the surfing community, ever so gracious to all competitors from all over the country, that's why we never hesitate to give them a hand whenever they would need us.

Now the schedule is up! Mayor Irizari sent me the site where you would find all answers to your questions regarding the competition. Lanuza is breathtaking. If saying the usual line " locals there are friendly" is passe, well I should say... That line truly belongs to lanuza wherein even the Mayor is your friend! See You there!

Oops Okoy did it again!- Eastern Samar Surfing Challenge

Fresh fresh news!... The awarding is still going on.... The Boys are still there... but i have the results ready for you already!

Okoy proves himself once again!!! Grabbing the 2nd runner up title for the Eastern Samar Surfing Crown. Okoy was actually the first surfer who won the Championship title from this town called GUIUAN in 2002, and now proves himself worthy of another title. Although he did not bag the Championship title once again for his come back, his victory is worth just the same since he has been away from the surfing circuit for two years, as he had to take the licensure exams, and yes, passed it. Just as soon as he was about to compete again, He had a vehicular accident on his way home to Aurora, to supposedly compete for the 10th Aurora Cup. He may have been dismayed by it, but Okoy, determined, did his best to recover as soon as possible from his head injury, just so he could surf once again.

There were only 5 Surfers from Luzon who competed against the " waray" and " Bisaya" surfers. Arnel Hermosura from La union, and Edmund " Dyango" Mendoza made it up to the quarter-finals. Argie " Badboy" Hugo and Joel " Brother" Faraon, both from Baler, Made it up to the Semi- Finals. It was only our own Rommel " Okoy" Rojo", who made it to the finals, competing against 3 siargaonons.

The waves were huge, according to my source, even the top surfers would at times have to throw their boards and dive their way in to cross the huge waves instead of the usual duck dive. While the Waves got huge, so did the white water. The sets were from 4 to 6ft. with outrageous white water that goes double overhead. The Final heat was intense, Eventually the scores were tallied and the close fight, finally came up with rankings.

1st runner-up: Bonifacio " Arkipo" Figuron (SIA)
2nd runner- up: Rommel " Okoy" Rojo (AU)
3rd Runner-up: Alex " Al-Al " Commandante (SIA)

Salute to Dodo, Arkipo and Al-Al for an overwhelming display of your skills in surfing!
As for the Luzon surfers, although outnumbered, fought hard until one found his way to the finals. Rommel " Okoy" Rojo definitely made his come back a proof and a very good example to all grommets,"put schooling your first priority your surfing could tag along with it, but if trapped to make a decision and choose between the two, choose schooling first because if you really have the "it" for surfing then you're definitely gonna find your way back in and still win". CHEERS TO THE UNITED PINOY SURFERS !!!

The First Live Webcam for surfers in the Philippines- trendsetter

Yes, San Juan Surf resort or better known as the Surf Camp is the first resort to have been so generous to the philippine surfing community, gracing everyone with live updates on the everyday status of the waves in La Union. You may click their logo to view their website or you could also click San Juan Surf Resort via the links area.

Rumor has it that the neighboring resort ( Literally a stone throw away) has the same service on thier website, claiming that it is theirs, when it actually leads straight to Surf Camp's own live webcam service! If you are familiar with La union, or better yet, if you frequent Surf Camp, you'd know where the webcam is located at. Right at the balcony of Bryan Landrigan's room!!! The father of Luke Landrigan, propreitor of the resort. Yes, and now one could get the same angle as that of what appears on your monitors, because all other resorts in La Union have blank lots in between each, giving each and every resort their own individual views. I need not to go further on this, It's not right to steal somebody else's work! ask permission. If you can't do that, at least acknowledge the owner and never have the audacity to claim anything that isn't yours.

As for other cheezmaks, I read a forum just today, About some " surfers" talking about Luke's webcam at surfcamp. While it is alright to be copycats, and since anyone could do the same thing nowadays, thanks to cheap webcams, and easy dsl installation now, I just need to make it clear, since i now sense that this is going to be a fad, I wanna declare that........San Juan Surf Resort started the whole live broadcasting of waves in this country. I do not know where this whole article is going, all I know is that at least I have documented it, and if ever so someone wishes to trace the history of surfing ( especially that the history of Philippine surfing is all tangled up about who started surfing first..) This shall at least serve as a proof. That surf camp, started broadcasting End of July 2006. If only I could also stamp a Notary Public dry seal online, i would... hehhehe. Happy surfing!

My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned because I couldn't concentrate. Then I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the axe. After that I tried to be a tailor, but I just wasn't suited for it. The job was only so-so anyhow. Next I tried working in a muffler factory, but that was exhausting. I wanted to be a barber, but I just couldn't cut it.I attempted to be a deli worker, but any way I sliced it, I couldn't cut the mustard. My best job was being a musician, but eventually I found I wasn't note worthy. I studied a long time to become a doctor, but I didn't have any patience. Next was a job in a shoe factory; I tried, but I just didn't fit in. I became a professional fisherman, but discovered that I couldn't live on my net income.I thought about becoming a witch, so I tried that for a spell. I managed to get a good job working for a pool maintenance company, but the work was just too draining. My last job was working at Starbucks, but I had to quit, because it was always the same old grind.After many years of trying to find steady work, I finally got a job as a historian, until I realized there was no future in it.

PARTAS' new buses! GENESIS in La Union?

Everyone!!! The partas terminal in Sampaloc is finally open! Well Actually it's been open for about two months.... But finally Okoy and I got to get a ride on one and boy!!! these new set of buses are literally brand new!!! still with the same rate as that in Cubao, the ones in Sampaloc Manila however are completely fresh, and really nice! It's like being on a deluxe trip.

Okoy and I just came back home from La union.... waited for the bus along the highway with the boys... still drinking Tangjun's new mix....took us an hour to finally get partas' newest bus...( real nice interior) we brought our monoblock chairs...sitting as if we were gonna be gunned by firing squad, and continued drinking... twas sweet... as always... my la union babies would always be there to get me inside the bus on my way home. now okoy and i are having this terrible separation anxiety leaving them... as the bus moving away... watching them still continuing to drink tangjun's mix along the highway.... haaayyyy.... anyway.... will be back there on my birthday...and that would be next week!...

Going Back to Partas sampaloc....While I would always, always wait for Cubao's Partas terminal's de luxe at 10 pm all the time just to get comfy all the way to la union, this time, i won't have to wait til 10 pm or feel bad if i miss the 10pm de luxe trip because the regular buses in sampaloc are competely like the deluxe ones in the cubao and pasay terminals. What's even better is that you have the comforts of a deluxe bus and paying only the regular rate of 395 pesos. really good price! Try it!

More update about this soon when I finally get the chance to find the number and schedule of the new terminal!

One More thing.... There's Genesis in La Union now ( " GENESIS" is the official bus company to Baler Aurora... or should I say the safest way to get to Baler). However, They don't have a La union- Baler trip yet or vise versa. Hopefully they would have those even if it's coming from Baguio- Baler and vise versa instead of the ragedy D-liner buses that would give you a heart attack because of the driving and rashes because of the heat since it doesnt have airconditioning!!! Pray!!! If that happens, then travelling to Baler and La Union from both ends would be a breeze. easier to follow the swell coz the Pacific and China seas are reachable already.Let's hope for the best Luzon Surfers!

Okoy is back!Baler's okoy is back and is ready to compete for this year's surf tour! He has been long away to gain a higher achievement such as of course becoming the only seeded surfer in the country to have finiished the highest degree being a licensed civil engineer!
